Heritage Projects

Lion Salt Works, Northwich

We worked closely with the Director of the Lion Salt Works Trust to prepare a business plan for the site. This forms a vital part of a Stage 2 Heritage Lottery bid for the restoration of the Lion Salt Works and its development as a major new visitor and educational attraction in the proposed Weaver Valley Regional Park. We also assisted with research on the potential of the site for educational visits and helped to provide targets for visitor numbers and their associated spending.

Ashton Gardens,  St Annes-On-Sea – Audience Development Plan

We prepared an audience development plan for the Grade II listed gardens in St Annes-on-Sea in Fylde Borough. The contract involved local consultation with interest groups and identified a range of projects that would better present the park to local people and to visitors. The attractive former Ashton Institute building will be relocated to the centre of the park and used as a café and space for community groups to use. We prepared a business plan for the operation of the building. In April 2007 the HLF awarded a Stage 2 pass for the park and the scheme is now being implemented.

Parks For People Programme

We prepared Audience Development Plans for four urban parks in the north of England as a key part of Heritage/Big Lottery bids. We worked on the bids with landscape architects Bertram Hyde and Chris Burnett Associates. The parks are Queens Park Bolton, Heaton Moor Park Stockport, Hale Park Halton and Eastwood Park Chesterfield. All involved local community consultation and the production of a budgeted action programme designed to encourage more public engagement with the parks.

Dunston Staiths, Gateshead

A study with Donald Insall Associates of the historic Tyne River coal staiths and how they can be regenerated and presented. The work involved significant community consultation, the formation of a local residents group and a plan for the interpretation of the structure and the wildlife interest of the tidal lagoon.

Corby Heritage Strategy

A strategic plan prepared with Oxford Archaeology for Corby Borough Council. The plan identified the range of natural, historical and cultural heritage assets in the Borough and identified a range of projects to better utilise and exploit these assets for the sustainable development of the area.

Kennet and Avon Canal Partnership

Together with Geoff Broom Associates I helped to prepare a visitor management and public transport plan for the Kennet and Avon canal corridor for British Waterways. This involved extensive consultation and workshops with local communities and user groups. The plan includes a section about sustainability indicators and a monitoring programme.

Brymbo Steelworks, Wrexham

A study with Donald Insall Associates of the historic Brymbo Steelworks site near Wrexham. The study recommended to the Wrexham Council how to develop the site for recreation and education and how the heritage features could be interpreted to the public. The funding mechanisms in connection with substantial housing development were a key aspect of the report.

Halton Castle, Runcorn

A study, with Donald Insall Associates, to prepare a Heritage Lottery bid to enhance the conservation and presentation of the castle in the Halton Village Conservation Area. The work involved the preparation of an access plan and an audience development plan.

Llanymynech Heritage Area, near Oswestry, Shropshire

A study (with Donald Insalls, Marketing Planning Associates and AAA Archaeological Advisors) of the Hoffman Kiln and other industrial archaeological features associated with the limestone industry and the Montgomery canal at Llanymynech. The study made proposals and costed the restoration of the heritage features and put forward a number of options for the scale of development appropriate for the site.

Maryport Educational Settlement

A business plan and community consultation exercise to seek agreement over the redevelopment of an historic building in Maryport, West Cumbria. The plan involved wide consultation with training and community development organizations and to relaunch the centre as a training and arts venue.

Sion Mills, Strabane, Northern Ireland

An initial appraisal of the interpretation and education potential of a large flax mill which is planned to be restored for mixed use development. The work was carried out for Donald Insall Associates and was part of a wider conservation management plan.
