Interpretation, Communications and Visitor Centres

Shapwick Heath National Nature Reserve

Working with TEAM Tourism Consulting we assisted in the preparation of a development and business plan for enhanced visitor facilities at Shapwick Heath NNR. This involved producing recommendations for the location, scale and facilities associated with a new visitor centre.

Natural Tourism In North West England

Working with Team Tourism Consultants and Blue Sail we organised a series of workshops with tourism and conservation interests in the five Tourist Board areas of the north-west of England. These workshops helped to identify projects to stimulate tourism and day trips and better utilise the natural assets of the north-west of England. The final report was designed primarily to give direction to a programme of tourism development work that forms part of the North West Natural Economy Programme of the NWDA and Natural England.

British Council - Know How Fund, Bulgaria

I managed a two year project in Bulgaria under the Management Development Fund (British Know How Fund) administered by the British Council. The aim of the project was to establish a new training and advice centre in Bulgaria for heritage and environmental interpretation, to experiment with some initial training courses and to establish one or two demonstration projects on the ground. Projects included a new interpretation trail, information panels and leaflets for an important countryside site.

Countryside Information for the Public

Together with Geoff Broom Associates I carried out a study for the Countryside Commission on their communication with the public about the countryside. This was a strategic review designed to guide the future policy of the Commission regarding its communication and publicity. It involved analysing the markets, messages and communication methods and applying this to the Commission's programmes.

In January 2001, I completed a four-month options appraisal for the development of a £2.5 mill. new Museum and Education Centre for the Creswell Heritage Trust, which covered business plans, scale of facilities, staffing and location options.

Peak District Interpretation Project

I was retained by the Peak District Interpretation project to manage the implementation of a number of on-site interpretation projects for Severn Trent Water, the National Trust and the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust. The projects were part funded by the European Union and included new trails, information shelter displays, on site boards and special events. Our role was to help appoint and brief consultants and contribute to the ideas.
