Visitor Surveys and Research
Cayman Islands Sustainable Tourism Conference
In May 2007 Graham Barrow was fortunate to be invited to attend the 9th Annual Caribbean Sustainable Tourism Conference in Grand Cayman to deliver a paper on recreational carrying capacity and to represent Team Tourism Consultants and Heritage and Tourism International (HTI) at the three day event. HTI is a valuable new link between Oxford Archaeology and Team Tourism Consultants, created to provide international consultancy services in heritage and tourism development. See www.heritageandtourism.com for more information on HTI.

Milford Haven - Recreational Carrying Capacity
Milford Haven Port Authority prepared a Recreation Plan in 2005 and this identified the need for a carrying capacity approach to help make judgements about the number of boats and moorings that would be appropriate on the waterway. We put forward a methodology for monitoring recreational use and environmental quality and prepared a brief for a full consultant study. We also helped the Port Authority fix an appropriate budget for the future work and obtained initial budget estimates from a number of consultant companies. |

South West Coast
Path Team, Devon
We have designed and administered two questionnaire
surveys aimed at researching the public’s
views and attitudes to the possible realignment
of a stretch of the South West Coast Path
National Trail. A postal survey of local residents
has obtained a 50% response and 500 interviews
with walkers on the coastal path have been
conducted. The results were analysed using
SPSS software and a report presenting the
results was submitted. |

National Trust
Countryside Visitor Surveys
We were contracted by the National Trust in
the Lake District to design and administer
a three-year on-site visitor survey aimed
to help the Trust with their future countryside
site interpretation and general marketing.
This has involved designing questionnaire
surveys, training volunteer interviewers and
analysing and interpreting the data. |
|
Arnside-Silverdale
AONB
We designed a recreation survey for the whole
AONB in 2003, piloted it, briefed volunteer
interviewers and analysed the results. We
have also designed a regular car parking count
to estimate the visitor numbers in the AONB.
These surveys will be repeated regularly.
A report on recreation and capacity was completed
in 2004. |

Lake District
National Park Visitors Surveys
We designed and analysed the results of a
survey of overseas visitors to the National
Park information centres for the National
Park Authority. The self-completion questionnaire
was translated into five languages. We have
also designed a survey of visitors to the
Bowness Information Centre and the Waterhead,
Ambleside car park to test the effectiveness
of a transport information experiment. |

Forest and Woodland
Access and Recreation Survey
I have assisted Peter Scott Planning Services
with a national study of access and recreation
provision in woodlands and forests throughout
Britain for the Forestry Commission. This
involved gathering data from public, private
and voluntary owners and managers of woodlands
in a number of sample counties throughout
England and Wales. This produced new data
on the public access situation to woodlands
and was valuable background to a major policy
review by the Forestry Commission. |

Local Agenda
21 in the north-west of England
In 1997 I completed a research study at the
University of Lancaster on the progress of
the local authorities in the North West of
England with Local Agenda 21. This involved
the design and administration of a telephone
questionnaire to the 46 local authority coordinators
of LA21. The research looked at the concept
of sustainable development and how plans were
being prepared and promoted by the local authorities. |

Local Authority
Chief Executives Survey re LA21
We have designed, piloted and administered
a postal questionnaire survey of the 425 Local
Authority Chief Executives in England, Wales
and Northern Ireland for Groundwork UK to
obtain their views on Local Agenda 21. An
excellent return of 57% was obtained. |
