A Selection of CEI Consultancy Contracts

The following is a summary of a selection of consultancy contracts with which I have played a major role whilst with the Centre for Environmental Interpretation (CEI), Manchester Metropolitan University.

1996 Pentland Hills Interpretation Plan

A plan prepared for the Pentland Hills Regional Park in Scotland to identify projects to enhance interpretation facilities and services. The plan identified a number of projects and indicated the necessary capital and revenue budgets required. The opportunity to establish a new charitable trust to support the work of the Regional Park and to assist in fund raising was suggested.

1995/6 Bulgaria Management Development Fund

A contract with the British Know How Fund (British Council) to advise on the establishment of a centre for advice and training on heritage and environmental interpretation in Bulgaria. Two experimental training courses were run in Bulgaria.

1995 Trafford Ecology Park

A study for the Trafford Park Development Corporation and the Groundwork Trust on the development and management options for an environmental education and training centre, including financial projections.

1995 Lee Valley Regional Park, London

A feasibility study (with Land Use Consultants) giving options for the development of the Essex filter beds site in the Lee Valley Regional Park. The study identified the potential for a new visitor attraction based on the principles of sustainability and suggested a broad layout of the site and indicative capital and revenue costs.

1995 Public Access and Carrying Capacity for Nature Reserves in Wales

A research study for the Countryside Council for Wales to establish a methodology for decision making regarding acceptable levels of recreational use on nature reserves in Wales. The methodology was further refined at two subsequent training courses.

1994/5 Peak Tourism Partnership Interpretation Plans

An eighteen-month contract for the Peak Tourism Partnership to work with eight local communities in the Peak District to produce local interpretation plans. The contract involved holding a series of workshops with local community groups and evolving proposals that helped to manage visitor pressures and to better present the local environment and heritage to the public. An overall strategy group for interpretation of the Peak District steered the work.

1992 Tweed Interpretation Plan

Scottish Borders Enterprise was concerned to make more positive use of the River Tweed as a tourism and marketing asset for the region. A steering group was formed and a plan prepared which identified ten major initiatives for raising awareness of the river and its scientific, aesthetic and economic importance.

1990/1 Development Opportunities in the Natural Environment of the Highlands

A strategic plan (prepared with ASH and Cousins Stevens) for Highland Regional Council and others for the long range use and development of the natural and scenic resources of the Region. The plan recognised the need for sustainable development opportunities and recommended twelve strategic projects, the majority of which have been implemented.
